The World Trade Center: The Story from Fresh Kills

September 8, 2025 @ 7:00 pm8:00 pm

From the start of the City’s response to the World Trade Center attacks, the Department of Sanitation was a key agency in
transporting the wreckage, working with federal, state, and other city agencies to coordinate the search and investigation effort, and finding the right place for Trade Center material upon completion of the search and investigation.
This talk focuses on the work of the DSNY in those months immediately after September 11, 2001. Illustrated with images that document the process as it evolved from Ground Zero to the Fresh Kills landfill, it details the ten months following the attacks.

Marty is currently the Commissioner of the Department of Environmental Control and the President of the Islip Resource Recovery Agency for the Town of Islip. He has an extensive career in Solid Waste Management, including serving as Director of the Bureau of Waste Disposal, Waste Disposal Engineering, and the Bureau of Recycling for the NYC Department of Sanitation.  During his tenure at the New York City Department of Sanitation, his significant accomplishments include managing all materials generated by the 9/11 attack, including operations at the Fresh Kills Landfill in Staten Island.  In addition, he was responsible for the operation and ultimate closure of the Fresh Kills Landfill, which involved designing and implementing the current export plan to handle all waste generated in NYC. Marty was in charge of the Bureau of Recycling for several years and managed through rigid budgetary constraints in the City.  After retiring from DSNY in 2005, he has worked for several engineering firms involved in various solid waste, recycling, and organic initiatives. Marty has a Bachelor of Science in Chemical Engineering.
